Dear Friends and Neighbours,

I hope this letter finds you well. This month, I would like us to reflect on the Biblical character of King Saul, the first king of Israel, as his life story presents timely lessons in leadership, integrity, and humility.

King Saul, a charismatic leader chosen for his impressive physical stature and leadership potential, enjoyed a meteoric rise to power. Like Boris Johnson, former British Prime Minister, he was initially well-liked and admired, entrusted with the leadership of a nation. However, their similarities run deeper, often in ways that should inspire caution rather than celebration.

Both Saul and Johnson were charismatic figures who promised prosperity and victory. Saul, however, allowed his authority to lead him astray from God’s commands. He made decisions based on his own will and convenience, bypassing the instructions God had given him. His dishonesty, lack of integrity, and inability to acknowledge his mistakes led to his downfall - an exile from God's favour.

Recent news events remind us of Saul’s story as we witness the consequences of Mr. Johnson's actions. Found to have deliberately misled Parliament, Johnson mirrors Saul in his evident struggle with integrity and humility.

This comparison, while sobering, is not meant to condemn but to inspire reflection. Saul’s story is a cautionary tale about the dangers of pride, dishonesty, and unaccountability. It shows us how important it is for those in positions of authority to lead with truth, integrity, and humility, to acknowledge mistakes when they are made, and to take appropriate actions to make things right.

Christians, believe that all leaders govern by God's permission and that they are accountable to Him for their actions. We also believe in the power of transformation and redemption. Saul's story ended tragically, but it need not be the same for our leaders today. They can choose to lead with honesty, integrity, and a heart for service, just as King David, Saul's successor, did.

Our role, as active citizens and as a faith community, is to continually pray for our leaders, hold them accountable, and encourage them to lead in a way that aligns with these values of honesty, integrity, and service.

As we ponder these narratives, may we strive to embody these traits in our lives - being honest, acting with integrity, and owning up to our mistakes. Remember, we are all leaders in our own right, whether at home, at work, or in our communities. Let's ensure we lead with love, truth, and humility, in line with God's teachings.

In faith and fellowship,
